Up On The Fire Escape

Up On the Fire Escape

Perched above the

Busy city

On cold metal.

A fly above

Watching it all.

Cars fly by

Crowded sidewalks lead

To crowded bars.

Up on the fire escape

It’s all part of a show

Happening down below

Legs dangle off the edge

Sounds and smells

Drift up from below.

Removed from

All the excitement underneath

An escape from city life.

Clinging to the wall

Above it all

Up on the fire escape.

I walked across the Manhattan Bridge the other day and had some great views of fire escapes which inspired this poem.

When have you been on a fire escape?
